John Angel Sculptor

Central, in Kings Square Bridgwater is this amazing war memorial which caught my eye recently. I looked for a signature but could find none. I am assured however that it is signed and it is 'an Angel', that is John Angel, a celebrated sculptor on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. He was born in Devon (South West England) and died in the USA. He had superlative training at the Royal Academy Schools under Colton and Frampton.

This work is somewhat unusual and very complicated. The right hand holds a globe which is reminiscent of Alfred Gilbert. The children figures, which are a little difficult to distinguish at first sight, are intriguing. The piece is filled with allegorical ideas: see more detail https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridgwater_War_Memorial

Hope all is well with you! I've been thinking about all the sculpture torn down of late, and how nobody seems to think of the sculptor when doing so...

Hi Marly, how wonderful to hear from you. Who is tearing down sculpture and where? Have I missed something? I am so busy these days that blogging is now rather low on my list of things I would like to do. I have recently been given some new commissions which is exciting after a rather blank couple of years. I wonder how your writing is going, I shall have to research you again and get up to date. Forgive me for being so bad at communicating!
